New York (United Nations) – The United Nations Security Council is discussing the situation in Syria on Friday in a closed consultation session.
Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen is expected to provide an update to Council members on the latest developments in the country.
Earlier this month, the Security Council called for a comprehensive political process led by the Syrians, emphasizing the “necessity for this process to meet the aspirations of all Syrians and enable them to determine their future in a peaceful and democratic manner.”
The Council pointed out in a statement the “importance of ensuring that the political process guarantees the rights of the Syrian people to determine their future,” reaffirming their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. They also urged all countries to respect these principles.
