New York (United Nations) – The representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and the coordinator with the United Nations Mission to Organize the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Sidi Mohamed Ammar, stressed that the only demand of the Sahrawi people is independence and the restoration of sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
In an interview with Sahrawi Television – the content of which was reported on Sunday by the Sahrawi News Agency (SAS) – Sidi Mohamed Ammar explained that “one of the most important elements of the historical context of the Special Committee on Decolonization is the United Nations, with its establishment in 1945, to ‘internationalize’ the issue of colonialism, which, the colonial countries insisted that it was an internal matter, so the United Nations Charter devoted a chapter to a declaration regarding the colonial territories and specified the responsibility of the international organization towards them.
He added: “But that was not enough, which prompted some countries, especially from Africa, Asia and Latin America, to work to adopt an explicit resolution regarding the right of the peoples of the colonial territories to self-determination and independence, and thus in December 1960 General Assembly Resolution 1514 (D) was adopted.” -15) Containing the Declaration granting independence to colonial countries and peoples. “To ensure special follow-up to the implementation of General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV), the General Assembly established the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, also known as the Committee of Twenty-Four.
The Committee included Western Sahara among the list of colonial countries subject to liquidation Colonization in December 1963,” the same speaker added.
Regarding the presence of the Sahrawi issue during the discussions of the Special Committee on Decolonization in its last substantive session, the Sahrawi diplomat referred to the statements made by member states from various continents before the Committee in which they expressed their strong support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence and the necessity of ending colonialism from the last colony In Africa.
In response to a question about what is required to be done by the United Nations to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence, the diplomat stressed that the only demand of the Sahrawi people, “for which they sacrificed so much and so much, is independence and the restoration of sovereignty over the entire territory.” The Sahrawi Republic. Therefore, the United Nations is required to take practical steps to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence.”
Regarding the possibility of reviving the peace process under the current circumstances and in light of the efforts that the UN Personal Envoy can make, Sidi Mohamed Ammar indicated that the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara remains completely halted due to the Moroccan occupying state violating and blowing up the ceasefire agreement on November 13, 2020, which prompted the Sahrawi people to resume their legitimate armed struggle.
He added, “Tracking the stages and reality of the peace process clearly shows that the Moroccan occupying state never wanted peace. Rather, its first bet remains an attempt to gain time to ‘legislate’ and consolidate its illegal occupation of the territory of the Sahrawi Republic in light of the silence and inaction of the United Nations, specifically the Security Council.”
In conclusion, the representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and the coordinator with MINURSO affirmed that the “strong and determined” response of the Sahrawi people to this situation is the slogan of the sixteenth conference of the Popular Front, which adopted “escalation of the fighting” as a “framework and guide for Sahrawi national action in all its manifestations,” as it continues today.
