Oslo – The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that Norway’s official recognition of the State of Palestine has entered into force.

With the entry into force of the official recognition of the State of Palestine, the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Ede, considered in a statement that this recognition represents “a milestone in the relationship between Norway and Palestine.”

Barth Eide added: “For more than 30 years, Norway has been one of the strongest advocates for the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

He expressed his hope that the international community would increase its political and economic support for Palestine and continue working towards a two-state solution.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister handed the Palestinian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Muhammad Mustafa, an “official recognition document” when they met in Brussels, the day before yesterday, Sunday.

Last week, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Sture said that “there will be no peace in the Middle East without a two-state solution” and stressed that a Palestinian state is “a basic condition for achieving peace in the Middle East.”

This comes after the Spanish and Irish governments today officially recognized a Palestinian state.

Last Wednesday, Ireland, Spain, and Norway announced that they would join the countries that recognize the State of Palestine, and that this decision will enter into force today (May 28).
