Peace in Mali: The UN Security Council confirms the pivotal nature of the Algiers Agreement

New York (United Nations) – The UN Security Council issued a press statement today, Saturday, in which its members affirmed the pivotal nature of the 2015 peace and reconciliation agreement in Mali that emerged from the Algiers process, calling on “all signatory parties to resume dialogue and commit to embodying the agreement in order to ensure peace and stability in Mali.

The same source added that on the occasion of the end of the mission of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, the members of the UN Security Council confirmed that they “recorded the end of the mission of the mission on December 31, 2023 after ten years of presence in accordance with Regulation 2690 (2023) at the request of the transitional government.” In Mali.”

In this regard, they also saluted “the great efforts made by the leaders and employees of the mission since 2013 to implement the mission’s mandate in very difficult circumstances, and they praised the Malian people, their resistance, and their efforts in this context.”

In the same context, the Council members stressed the pivotal nature of the 2015 peace and reconciliation agreement in Mali that emerged from the Algiers process, calling on “all signatory parties to resume dialogue and commit to embodying the agreement in order to ensure peace and stability in Mali.”

The statement added, “They also praised the 311 MINUSMA personnel who died in the service of peace, expressing their sincere condolences to their families, while wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded during the withdrawal phase.” “The members of the Council also recognized the role played by the transitional government in Mali during the withdrawal of MINUSMA, stressing the necessity of total and continuous cooperation for the transitional government in Mali, especially respecting its obligations within the framework of the agreement on the status of forces.”

Finally, they concluded by stressing that “they remain committed to promoting peace and security in Mali and in the region,” the same statement added.
